Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?

The consumer unit (also known as a fuse board or distribution board) is the heart of your property's electrical system. It distributes electricity from the mains supply to individual circuits throughout your home or business and contains the protective devices that cut power in the event of a fault. If your property still has an older fuse board with rewirable fuses or early miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) without residual current device (RCD) protection, it is not providing the level of safety required by modern electrical standards.

Current UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) require that consumer units in domestic properties provide RCD protection to circuits supplying socket outlets, circuits in bathrooms, and cables buried in walls. Older boards simply cannot offer this. An RCD can detect current leakage to earth in as little as 30 milliseconds and disconnect the supply automatically, dramatically reducing the risk of electric shock or fire caused by a wiring fault. Beyond safety, many home insurers, mortgage lenders, and landlord licensing schemes now require evidence that a property has a modern consumer unit before they will provide cover or approve a sale.
