Electrical faults range from the straightforward to the genuinely complex. A circuit breaker that trips immediately when reset suggests a hard fault such as a short circuit, whereas one that trips intermittently may indicate a deteriorating connection, a failing appliance, or a wiring problem that only manifests under load. Flickering lights might point to a loose connection at a switch, a failing lamp driver, or a problem at the consumer unit. Identifying the actual cause, rather than replacing components until the problem goes away, requires skill, experience, and the right diagnostic equipment.
At JR Electrical Services, we use a methodical approach to fault finding. We take time to understand when the fault occurs and what conditions trigger it, then use insulation resistance testers, multifunction testers, and thermal imaging where appropriate to pinpoint the problem. This avoids unnecessary disruption to your property and means we can quote clearly for the repair rather than working on a time-and-materials basis with no clear endpoint.
Common faults we diagnose and repair include: RCD or MCB tripping, complete loss of power to a circuit or room, burning smells or scorch marks at outlets, intermittent power loss, overheating sockets or switches, damage caused by DIY work or pest damage to cables, and faults following work by other trades. We carry out all repairs to BS 7671 standards and issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or an Electrical Installation Certificate as appropriate.
Common Faults We Fix
Tripping Circuit Breakers
RCDs and MCBs that trip repeatedly are a sign of an underlying fault. We identify the exact cause — short circuit, earth fault, or overload — and fix it correctly.
Loss of Power
Dead sockets, a room without power, or no power to an entire floor. We trace the fault back to its source and restore supply safely.
Flickering or Intermittent Lights
Loose connections, failing fittings, or voltage fluctuations can all cause flickering. We diagnose and repair the root cause, not just the symptom.
Burning Smells & Scorch Marks
These are warning signs of a serious fault. We treat these as urgent and identify whether the problem is at a specific outlet, in the wiring, or at the consumer unit.
Faulty Sockets & Switches
Damaged, loose, or discoloured accessories are replaced safely, with checks on the wiring connections behind them.
Post-Build or DIY Damage
Cables drilled through by builders, plastered over joints, or badly executed DIY modifications are a common source of faults that we locate and repair properly.
