When Does Your Property Need Rewiring?

Electrical wiring does not last forever. The plastic insulation around cables degrades over time and older wiring materials such as rubber, lead, or aluminium can become brittle, crack, or corrode. Properties built before the 1970s often still contain wiring that was designed to a completely different standard than what is required today. Signs that your wiring may be approaching the end of its safe life include discoloured or charred sockets, a persistent burning smell, frequently tripping circuits, flickering lights, or fuses that blow repeatedly for no obvious reason.

A full rewire involves removing all existing cables throughout the property and installing new wiring from the consumer unit to every socket, switch, and light fitting. This is typically needed in properties that have not been rewired in 25 to 40 years, or where an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) has identified unsatisfactory conditions. A partial rewire targets specific areas or circuits where problems have been identified, such as a bathroom, kitchen, or extension, without disrupting circuits that remain in good condition.
